Sunset Bokor

Go back

Like an oasis with vegetation carefully concealing a slither of open space by the coastline nearby the provincial community near the estuary of the Prek Kdat River, the Sunset Bokor is a place for the family to Gather, Celebrate, Play and Rest.

The architectural expression is informed by a rather straightforward program and the opportunity to maximize views of the sea from all interior spaces.

Some excitement is added by the shifting of planar elements within the dining pavilion in relation to the sun setting in the southwest direction and the use of depth and texture of the curvilinear glass block. The additional four bedrooms building were added behind the dining pavilion forming circulation surrounding the courtyard and creating sculptural staircases as well as a crossing bridge on the upper level. Hence, bringing people, nature and the natural surroundings closer together.

From the open living, dining and island counter to powder rooms, bathrooms and bedrooms, the interior programs and layouts are open and connect to nature in its references to variegated stone-effect flooring, wall-to-wall mirror reflecting its’ immediately landscape, the sea, the islands and the sunset at the horizon. Privacy and security for dwellers in the open environment are reinforce by enclosure of second walls and with the use of translucent glass blocks which bring in daylight and the ever-changing colors of the sky throughout the day.

Memories of playfully molding and casting sandcastles on the beach as the sunset skies transform from hues of tangerine to shades of warm earth tones inspire the exploration of tactile, material and color palette within the pavilion and other components like the outdoor shower and locker chambers. The minimalistic interior opens to view of the sand, the sea and islands on the horizon.

The morning glory-covered green rooftop at the dining pavilion also performs as an elevated viewing platform, another element of peace, tranquility, and meaningful life; An opportunity to leave the world on the ground to get closer to nature and the ethereal kaleidoscope of the sky. The outcome, a constellation of crafted structures in the landscape that exude a sense of eternal belonging to the place.
